Willem Lodewijk van Nassau
Leeuwarden Lonkt

Leeuwarden
Stadhouderlijk Hof, autumn 1587

Willem Lodewijk, stadholder of Friesland, leaves for Franeker to make arrangements about the wedding ceremony between him and his cousin Anna, daughter of Willem van Oranje.

The Stadhouderlijk Hof in the atmosphere of 1587. Only the gate behind the horse and shape of the building is still there. Based on existing sketches of that time, I knew the atmosphere of that time. By photographing parts of buildings, fence or street that are still present in Leeuwarden at the right time, with the right light and then making everything into one with Photoshop, I went back in time.

Willem Lodewijk van Nassau is a distant relative of our current king and a popular stadtholder at the time. He married his high school sweetheart, Anna van Nassau. Anna died at a young age when she was pregnant with their first child. Willem Lodewijk never remarried out of respect for her and had no descendants. Yet he went down in history as “us heit”, our father, because of his enormous commitment to Friesland. Willem Lodewijk was captain-general of the army of Friesland and, together with his cousin Prince Maurits van Oranje, he built up commander-in-chief of the States Army in the fight against the Spaniards in the 80-year war and built up the new Netherlands. He not only achieved military successes but also founded, for example, the Franeker University in 1585. After his death, the governorship passed to his brother. This Ernst Casimir is the distant ancestor of our current King Willem Alexander.

The series Leeuwarden Lonkt
Maartje Roos has captured fragments from the lives of famous historical Leeuwarders in a contemporary manner. Recognizable locations and elements of the current city have been used to go back in time. The Stadhouderlijk Hof, for example, can be seen in its old form by using modern photo techniques and the still-present parts of buildings in the city.

In total, so far, 33 figurant have posed in historical costumes. Three dogs, three horses, a cat and birds have appeared before the lens. Special ballet clothing had to be made. And it has been quite a quest to get the right ballet hall, pram, grand piano, mirror and car from that time. Even the actual household effects of Troelstra were unpacked from the Tresoar store in Winschoten for the first time after fifteen years.
